The Problem

Ameritas needed stronger account security.

My Contributions

Through research and industry trends, I have advocated for implementing passkeys. Specifically looking at how additional methods will function in the registration, sign in, and profile experience (adding them and removing them).

Impact

Currently being tested with users, with development planned across multiple Ameritas business lines.

Learning

I learned that advocating for a better solution means meeting people where they are. Instead of just arguing passkeys were technically superior, I needed to frame it around the outcomes the team already valued, like conversion and friction reduction.

Old Designs

Documented the existing settings screen and experience.

The problem: this experience would need to add the additional security methods and would cause multiple clicks and not very clear if what has been added or not.

Where to Promote New Security

Where to Promote New Security

The other important thing to look at is where in the user journey customers will become aware of these authentication methods and ways to easily convert customers to more secure and easier security.

I identified four moments with the highest promotional value and lowest friction cost:

  1. After a forgot-password flow: this is a moment a user is frustrated with passwords and most receptive to an easier alternative.

  2. After a successful sign-in: this is a similar pattern to many competitors.

  3. On the dashboard: a persistent, dismissible nudge for authenticated users.

  4. On the profile screen: for users who are browsing that area for other information.

For each of these, I sketched concept UI (modal and card variants) with messaging built around the two core value props from the research: "Ditch your password" (speed) and "No more forgotten passwords" (relief from a known pain point).

Research

Research was launched to help understand users and how they use security to unlock their phone and which security they prefer when using various apps.

New Designs

  • Considered all available security methods and how those

  • Made it easy to see what's been added vs what's not been added yet

  • Allows users to the ability to add/remove multiple passkeys

  • Grouped password and the two step verifications together( because password requires an additional verification method)

Outcome

These designs are still in the concept phase and have not yet been validated with users. We've established a framework aligned with the team's intended direction, which can be revised in the future based on testing.
